エンジニアに英語は必須だ。 テクノロジーに関するほぼすべてのドキュメントと論文は英語で発信されている。 プログラミング言語も英語がベースだ。 英語ができるようにならないと、世界の一流エンジニアにはなれない。 英語ができるエンジニアとできないエンジニアでは成長のスピードが全く違う。 アクセスできる情報量が桁違いに違うのでこれは当然だ。
English is essential for engineers. Almost all documents and papers on technology are published in English. English is also the base programming language. If you cannot understand English very well, you cannot become the world’s top engineer. The growth speed between engineers who can understand English and those who cannot is completely different. This is not a surprise, as the amount of information they can access is different.
「英語ができる」と言ってもレベルは様々だ。 まずはここで言う「英語ができる」ということを定義したい。ネイティブレベルということではなくエンジニアとして仕事ができることをまずは目指す。
There are different levels of “English Proficiency”. First of all, we would like to define what we mean here by “English Proficiency”. Our goal is not to be a native, but to be able to use English at work as an engineer.
なぜ中学生から勉強しているのに英語ができないのか
Why can’t I speak English even though I have been studying since junior high school?

これは成功体験の不足が原因だ。 若い頃から挑戦していない、 挑戦による成功体験を得たことがないからだ。これは自分を信じて挑戦する、挑戦してできるようになった人が近くにいる環境に身を置く以外ない。

「英語ができる」の3つの段階と各構成要素は次の通り

レベルの難易度は当然、メール、チャット、 英会話の順だ。 なぜなら英会話の方がヒアリングが必要なだけでなく、はるかにレスポンスに求められるスピードが早いからだ。

How to develop grammar skills
- 基本的な文法書を一冊買う
Buy one basic grammar book. - 毎日何度も読み、2週間に一回は1周するようにする→20周したら終わり。一周完了時に完了日を記載する
Read the book many times each day and try to do one lap every two weeks. When you have finished 20 laps → you are done. Write down the lap completion date on a note. - ルールを理解したら例文は単語帳に移す→最後は単語帳に集約して単語帳だけ復習すれば良いようにする
Once you understand the rules, move the example sentences to your vocabulary book → Finally, write them in your vocabulary book so you only need to review one vocabulary book.

- 自分の単語帳を作り、ブックマーク機能をしようして苦手な単語だけを暗記する。得意な単語を何度復習しても時間の無駄

Understand the Ebbinghaus’s Forgetting Curve- 一日に60分単語を覚える時間をとれるのであれば、60分x1回にせずに、10分x6回にする。一日に何度忘却曲線を上げられるかが勝負
If you can spend 60 minutes a day memorizing words, do not spend 60 minutes at one time. Instead, spend 10 minutes x 6 times. The purpose is how many times you can raise your forgetting curve in a day.

Make it a daily habit to memorize without studying. Sitting at a desk is painful. Instead, you can do it for 10 minutes when you wake up in the morning, 10 minutes in the bathroom, 10 minutes during lunch break, and 10 minutes while waiting for the train. - アプリの再生機能を利用して移動しながらでも復習できるようにする。発音も覚えられるので一石二鳥

We recommend keeping each subfolder to about 30 words. This will allow you to replay the book several times, even in 10 minutes. How to develop listening skills
まずは何で英語が聞き取れないのか考えてみよう。 洋楽の同じ曲を何度も聞いて聞き取れるようになっただろうか？多分なかなかならない。 英語を聞いてるだけでできるようになるには、膨大な時間がかかる。 脳みその柔らかい小さな子供ですら英語を聞き続けて喋れるようになるまでは10年ぐらいかかるわけだ。 しかもこれにはネイティブの英語漬けの環境が必要だ。 最短ルートで英語を喋れるようにするために、文法があり、効率的な勉強方法を実行する必要がある。
First of all, let’s think about why we can’t understand English by hearing. Have you learned from listening to the same Western music over and over again? Probably not. It takes an enormous amount of time only with listening to English. It takes about 10 years for even a small child with a soft brain to speak English after listening to English for a long time. Moreover, this requires an environment where they are immersed in English with native speakers. This is because there is a “difference” or “gap” between the sound I imagine and the sound is pronounced. Since we have identified the problem, now we need to figure out how to solve it. This is similar to “programming” like solving a “bug” of inaudibility. Once the cause of the problem is identified, the “bug” is almost solved. For engineers, solving bugs is a piece of cake.
ヒアリング力を高めるには、自分が想像している音と、発音されている音の「ギャップ」を埋めることを意識する。ただ聞き流していただけでは、この「ギャップ」は、永遠に埋まらないので、 必ずテキストを確認できる状態で聞く。 聞き取れなかったら、正しい発音と自分の想像する音との間に「ギャップ」があるわけなので、その「ギャップ」がなくなるまで何度も聞く。それだけ。ここまでちゃんとやって、毎日英語に触れる環境であれば、1−2年でTOEIC900点は楽勝でとれる。
To improve your hearing, be aware of closing the “gap” between the sound you imagine and the sound being pronounced. This “gap” will never be bridged by simply listening to the text, so check it while listening. If you can’t hear it, there is a gap between the correct pronunciation and the sound you imagine, listen to the text over and over until the gap disappears and that’s all. 日本人は自信がない言語で話すことが苦手だ。 これは日本が島国であり、長い間、日本語のネイティブ同士で完璧な言語でしかコミュニケーションしてないことに起因する。それに対し、国境が陸続きの国では、様々な人種・言語を話すことが普通であり、 完璧な言語じゃなくても単語をつなぎ合わせて完璧じゃない言語でコミュニケーションを実現することに抵抗がない。 そもそも、英語なんかネイティブじゃない人口の割合の方が約75%圧倒的に多い。めちゃくちゃな英語を話すことが普通なのだ。原因は分かった。あとは英語ネイティブの言ってることがわからなかったら、「Can you speak English?」と言えば良いだけだ。これでメンタルタフネスも向上する。
