サーフィンとスノーボードをこよなく愛していたサトルとは、20歳のとき、NZの長期滞在中に出会った。サーフィン道具を全部貸してくれて、初サーフィンに連れて行ってくれたのもサトルだ。同じ歳で気が合い、大会でバッタリ会うこともよくあった。色々な山を一緒に登り、滑った。その後、サトルは世界中を飛び回り、最終的には北海道に山岳ガイドとして移住したが、20代後半という若さで天国に旅立ってしまった。男前で、滑りもイケてて、いいヤツでみんなに愛されていた。金がないからカナダの山の中でキャンプ生活をしていたら、食料全部熊に食われた話も面白かった。
I met Satoru, who loved surfing and snowboarding, when I was 20 years old during a stay in NZ. He took me surfing for the first time with all his surfing equipment. We were the same age and often joined competitions. We climbed and shredded many mountains. Satoru went around the world and finally moved to Hokkaido as a mountain guide, but he passed away in his late 20s. He was handsome, great snowboarder and surfer, was a good guy, so everyone loves him. It was so funny to hear the story about how he was camping in the mountains of Canada because he had no money and all his food was eaten by a bear.

Since I have not been able to go abroad for the past few years because of Covid, I went to Hokkaido on New Year’s holidays. Every time I go to Hokkaido, I remembered Satoru. At the same time, at the end of the year, I look back on the year and wonder if I lived life to the fullest. If I spend a boring day, Satoru, who lived every day to the fullest, would say to me.
「ヤマ、お前がそんな風に適当に一日を過ごすのなら、変わってくれよ。おれが全力で生きてやるから」

今年もお前が選んだ北海道のパウダーは軽くて最高でした。ごちそうさまです。今年も誰よりも遊び、学び、誇れるエンジニアの仲間とITの仕事を全力でしたいと思う。天国でサトルとまた会うときには、「お前が旅立ったあと、全力で生きてきたわ」と胸を張って言えるようにしたい。
