Project development is mostly communicated through a chat web service, so you do not have to rely on spoken English. And if you do not understand something, it is easy to look up!
In an environment where you use English everyday, you will naturally acquire English skills by communicating repeatedly on a daily basis. I started with a TOEIC score of 285, but in less than half a year I was able to manage a team of five Indonesian programmers to complete a project.

Tomas Sullivan
Project Manager
Graduated from Trinity College Dublin in Ireland with a degree in English literature. I have been an English teacher in Junior High School and a Career Advisor for bilingual Engineers in Japan. I entered Grune because I can use all my existing skills while still challenging myself and growing.
Gruneになぜ入ったのか?きっかけは?
Because it is a company that prioritizes English and internationisation I felt that we could use advanced technology where there is no documentation in Japanese. I felt this would gives us an advantage over other companies which don`t prioritize English.
会社の雰囲気、社風は?
We have good size desks, 1-2 extra monitors, there are plants everywhere and we can play music in the background. It`s a very pleasant environment to work in.
社長はどんな人ですか?
He really cares about the development of people at Grune, particularly new graduates. He encourages all of us to learn not just technical skills, but core skills like logical thinking and critical thinking. Also if there is a shy member he will try to include them. He goes to lunch with staff maybe once a month and he created a program called English lunch so that member can improve their English. Also if there is a type of project you want to work on(AI, VR etc), he will try to assign you to that project, because he wants staff to be happy in what they do, as much as possible.
あなたが思うGruneの強みは?
I think our focus on continuously improving our work in terms of time, quality and cost is our strength. We are always asking "why is this process necessary? ", "would it be better if we did this?"
This means we can save our time which ultimately increases our salary and allows to have better work life balance compared to other Japanese companies.
Gruneをどんな会社にしたいですか?
I want to create an environment where Engineers can speak English comfortably and enjoy speaking English. I would also like to help Grune in dealing with international clients.
現在の仕事内容は?
I am managing two large projects. One is for a nationwide real estate service and one is a service helping users to find cheap and easy to use parking near them.
For projects that I manage, I coordinate the entire software development lifecycle end to end from requirement definition to system design to user testing and SEO.
In addition I am in charge of English education for all members. I help translate technical documents and prepare classes focused on English that is necessary for Engineers.
チャレンジしてみたい仕事は何ですか?
1. Develop a service for engineers and other IT professionals learning English. Particularly, I think Engineers in Japan actually know lots of relevant vocabulary, but need help to become confident in spoken and written English.
2. Manage projects that apply machine learning for a customer problem, for example recommendation systems and natural language processing.

Ida Hendra
General Manager
Born in Denpasar, Bali 30 years ago. I was originally trained as a researcher. I graduated with my Ph.D. from Tohoku University in Sendai Japan in the field of Computational Science (Molecular Dynamics). I never work in a real job before and being part of Grune is my first professional working experience. I learn basic web development for 3 months when I was an intern at Grune Office in Sendai. Now, I am working as General Manager for the Grune team in Indonesia. I am in charge of the company administration, hiring, human resource development, project management, and communication with the Japan team.
Why did you choose Grune?
A beautiful coincidence if I can say. Due to personal preference, I want to return to my home country in Bali, Indonesia after 5 years of staying in Japan. I was an instructor of the CEO (Yamashita San) to learn Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language) for about 1 year. He offered me to open a new office for Grune in Bali, Indonesia. At that time Grune already has an office in Yogyakarta City with employees of around 15 people. At first, I was hesitant to accept it because I did not have professional education or experience in the IT field. However, knowing that I can start something new and build my own team in Bali, finally I accepted the offer. I started Bali Office with 4 members in February 2019, and now we have a total of 15 members (developers and 3D artists) in Bali.
How is the Grune working atmosphere?
As a manager, It is my job to make sure we can achieve a conducive working environment. It was very challenging for me at first time but gradually we can be better step by step with continuous improvement. There are 3 approaches I believe are essential to provide a good working condition. 1. First, all members need to know exactly what they have to do. Thus, the task should be prepared in advance with a clear description. It encourages each member to have a specific goal every day. 2. A working flow must be clear (for example, how to use git). Therefore, simple yet concise documentation or standard operational procedures (SOP) must exist. 3. All members must be trained to have good communication skills. Good communication reduces the risk of miscommunication and wrong assumptions between each other. The way of communication should be clear and effective. With good communication, trust will grow between you and your co-worker. I think trust is very important to be a strong team.
What do you think about Japanese Members?
As typical Japanese, all Japanese member are very supportive and kind. They also willing to sacrifice time to learn English for better communication with Indonesian team.
How is the CEO?
I think Yamashita-San is a very interesting Japanese. I learn many things from him either about life or IT knowledge. One example that I want to share is the importance of enjoying your life. Of course, you should enjoy your work. However, sometimes work can be overwhelming and stressful. In that case, you have to find other aspects in life that make you happy every day. It can be your hobby or something else. Yamashita-San enjoys his hobby of surfing every day before he starts working. Another example is to grow yourself by accepting challenges or move out of your comfort zone. For example, he learns Bahasa (Indonesian Language) consistently and put effort to do it.
In your opinion what is the excellence of Grune?
Not many Japanese companies can work together smoothly with overseas partners. I think Grune has a "know-how" about overseas collaboration. Grune also can provide an international working environment for the member.
Why did you choose the IT field for your career?
IT is an interesting field. You can start with minimum capital. Just a notebook and internet connection. the question is whether you want to give it a try and willing to learn or not.
What kind of company would you like Grune to be in the future?
I think Grune should grow to be a company that can change people to be a better person, become professional regardless of they keep staying in Grune or not. I want Grune to be a company that can keep competitive salaries and various compensation to the member. In addition, I want Grune to be an IT company that build interesting products (Web System, Apps, VR/AR, etc).
What is your current responsibility for Grune?
As I mentioned above, I am working as General Manager for the Grune team in Indonesia. I am in charge of company administration, hiring, human resource development, project management, and communication with the Japan team. My background working as a scientist during my Ph.D. courses was a little bit lonely for me. Now I am working with a lot of people with intense communication and planning every day. Surprisingly, I actually enjoy managing people and doing project management. I want to build a strong and professional IT team. I hope Grune can grow to be an IT company with 50-100 people in the next 5 years.
Dirga Paradila
Web Developer
My name is Dirga Paradila, born 29 years ago in Tabanan, Bali. I am a web developer and a graphic designer. I studied IT at a public university in Bali. Before working as a full-time web developer, I worked as a freelance web developer and graphic designer for almost 9 years. I have had the opportunity to work with several international clients around the world. I lay my passion for both designing and programming.
Why did you choose Grune?
A dilemma of choosing a path to become a full-time designer or programmer brought me to Grune. Working in design requires extra creativity and inspiration is not always your good friend. I thought that I had enough of these and then I turned myself into a full-time programmer. I applied to Grune and get welcomed by Mr. Ida which I did not expect to be a young man with many life experiences, talking behind the phone. We started with 4 people and never knew we could grow this fast.
How is the Grune working atmosphere?
To be honest, the first month of work was quite a challenge. We did not know each other that much and trust was something we built along the way. I have learned a lot from these great people around me. Being a programmer, I realized technical skill is not the first on the list. Communication and writing skills come first. We did not know that back then. Today, I am trusted to lead a small team consisting of 3-4 developers. I shall retain this responsibility the best I could.
What do you think about Japanese Members?
It may sounds cliche but the Japanese team is indeed very supportive and kind. Even with the language barriers, we both have, they never hesitate to support everything every time.
How is the general manager?
The manager in Bali has what it takes to be a great conductor of the Bali office. The man is wise as a leader and is young enough to have fun with. He can be funny and hilarious at the right time. Most importantly he listens to every member both as a leader and a friend. I learned many great things from his leadership.
In your opinion what is the excellence of Grune?
Grune has to be one of the best places in their field that you should consider to be working in. We have been working and collaborating overseas without almost any issue even in this uncertain time. The company appreciates every member. It also exposes you to international working experience which I enjoy the most when I was working as a freelancer.
Why did you choose the IT field for your career?
If I was not a web developer, I would have been a full-time graphic designer. Being a designer requires a huge amount of creativity, not everyone has that, and certainly, I am not one of them. Furthermore, inspiration does not always come to you. I thought it would be hard for me to work full-time with all these limitations I have. Here I am now being a code writer.
What kind of company would you like Grune to be in the future?
I hope Grune could always be a fun workplace as it is right now for all of us. I hope Grune will be the best workplace to innovate, learn, and practice the latest technologies, etc.
What is your current responsibility for Grune?
As a member, I am responsible to participate in keeping the working experience great for others. As a web developer, I am responsible for improving the company and assure its product quality, especially in the frontend area which I am most capable of. Building something easy to use is difficult. As a team leader, I am responsible for managing my small team, assisting them with various information, keeping the assignment and workflow stay fluent.
What is your dream job?
Well, I actually have no preference for what my dream job is. I enjoy working in fields that I am passionate about. Sadly I only have two which are designing and programming. Other than that, the people and the working environment take the most important role in creating such an enjoyable working experience. I love learning new things related to my passion. So, as long as the job allows me to learn and practice new things and technologies, I would love to call it my dream job. In regard to the working location, I am highly interested in working in foreign countries.
Luqman Hakim
Web Developer
Born in Buleleng (North part of Bali, Indonesia), 28 years ago. I studied at a private university in Bali majoring in Information Systems. I worked in web development from a young age after graduating from senior high school. So I was working in IT even before I got a formal education in IT at a university. I learn by myself on the internet and at the office. I like software problem-solving and I think I am quite good at it. I think you need to be confident (not overconfident) when you face a problem, it helps you to prevent mental blocks for solving the issues. You need to be passionate about your work, it will give you patience when you face an obstacle. Besides web development, I love 3D design also and gaming.
Why did you choose Grune?
I saw in job ads that Grune needs a developer for a newly created Bali Office. The team was small and I feel it is a challenging working environment for me to get new knowledge and explore opportunities. I feel also I can contribute more to the growth of the company when we are just a small team. I am interested also in the international working environment because Grune Indonesia is working with developers in Japan.
How is the Grune working atmosphere?
When I joined Grune, we faced some challenging projects at that time. I felt the working atmosphere has pressure. However now, the managers (Both in Indonesia and Japan) do their best to manage the project so members can work at a reasonable pace and I see the members look happier now. So, I think Grune keeps growing to be a professional working space.
What do you think about Japanese Members?
I think Japanese members are kind and supportive. Language differences can be overcome by communicating in English, even if the word choice is not perfect, as long as we understand each other, I think the language barrier is not a big problem.
How is the general manager?
The manager is still young. So the manager can be a good friend to us without losing his role as a manager. He also gives many communication support. Sometimes as a coder, it is a bit difficult for me to explain technical terms that are easy to understand.

Mavindra Adiyasa
Web Developer
I was born in Denpasar-Bali, Indonesia. I graduated from a private university in Bali with a bachelor's degree in computer science. Prior to working at Grune, I worked as a web developer at a local web development company. I consider myself an introvert but I like to make new friends. I like to play video games and problems solving. Sometimes I feel web development is similar to playing games. I think my strong point is that I can focus on complex problems and patiently search for solutions. My hobby besides coding is playing badminton with friends. It makes me feel refreshed by doing dynamic movements. I try to do my best in my work because I think a second chance is uncertain.
Why did you choose Grune?
I was searching for a job and I saw a job vacancy from Grune. I tried to get information about the company and it was mentioned that I will work with people from overseas. I thought it would be very interesting to work in an international environment. I never work with people from overseas so I gave it a shoot to apply.
How is the Grune working atmosphere?
I think the working atmosphere is good. Grune members helped each other regardless of different task assignments. I think all members have a good personality which contributed to make a good working environment where all members can grow.
What do you think about Japanese Members?
I think Japanese members are very supportive regardless of the language barrier. Japanese members give task step by step and care about the details. I learn a lot from them.
How is the general manager?
I think the manager is a good leader. He is still young and willing to listen to our opinion. He always tries to make the working atmosphere enjoyable. I actually did not pass the initial test because the checker thought that my coding approach is a little bit strange. However, the manager invited me to the office to explain why I approach in a such way. So I feel there is no judgment, sometimes we have our own thought when approaching something. I felt the working environment is very good.

I think the excellence of Grune is the working environment created by members. The members have good communication with each other.
