この記事では、私が今年の3月に初めてのバリオフィスに3週間滞在して感じたことについて紹介したいと思います！今回のバリ海外出張ブログは、全3記事のシリーズとして連載します。
In this article, I would like to share my experiences from my first three-week stay at our Bali office in March of this year! This blog about my business trip to Bali will be published as a series of three articles.

Gruneの開発拠点 バリオフィスへ
Gruneは現在、仙台オフィスとバリオフィスの2つをメインの拠点として構えており、私は普段、仙台オフィスで働いています。
Grune currently operates out of two main bases, the Sendai office and the Bali office. I usually work at the Sendai office.
今回私は初めてバリオフィスを訪れ、2023年の3月中旬から4月にかけて3週間滞在しました。バリのメンバーとは、毎日一緒に働いていますが、メンバーのほとんど全員と直接会うのも、今回が初めてで、少し緊張しました。
This was my first visit to the Bali office, where I stayed for three weeks from mid-March to April 2023. I work with the Bali members every day, but it was my first time meeting almost all the members in person, which made me a little nervous.

実際に交流したメンバーの紹介です！
Here’s an introduction to the members I interacted with!
まずは、久しぶりに会えたDirgaさん！
First, I met Dirga, whom I hadn’t seen for a while!
彼は去年、バリから仙台に来て、様々なところに滞在しました。
Last year, he came from Bali to Sendai and stayed in various places.

帰ってからも、仕事では関わっていましたが、久しぶりに会えたことは、なんだかとても嬉しかったです！
Even after he returned, we continued to work together. I was so happy to see him again after such a long time!
次にMavin！彼は今回、私のことをいろいろな場所に連れて行ってくれました。Ogoh Ogoh、Patang Patang beachなど多くの場所に連れて行ってくれてありがとう！
Next, Mavin! He took me to various places this time. Thank you for taking me to many places like Ogoh Ogoh, Patang Patang Beach!

今回、彼とは仕事終わりやお昼など、一番多く時間を過ごしました。実際に話した内容のほとんどはここでは到底公開はできないのですが…笑
バリオフィス、仙台オフィスでそれぞれメンバーをまとめるもの同士、Gruneのこれまでのことから今後のことまで、多くのことを語り合いました。
そして、初めてバリに滞在する私のために、多くのことをサポートしていただきました。彼には本当に感謝しています。
彼は来年の春に日本に来る予定です。また会えることを楽しみにしています。
This time, I spent the most time with him, after work and at lunchtime. I can’t reveal most of the things we actually talked about here… lol
As the ones who organize members in each of the Bali Office and Sendai Office, we discussed many things about Grune, from the past to the future.
And for me, who was staying in Bali for the first time, he supported me in many ways. I am truly grateful to him.
He is planning to come to Japan in the spring of next year. I’m looking forward to seeing him again.

I also had fun with many other colleagues in the Bali engineer team.
Modi and Sarisha who took me to a cafe on the second day when I was totally lost!
Everyone (a large number of people) who invited me to badminton!
Thata who took me to Ubud with Mavin!
Pratama who opened the office for me at a sudden request!
みんな、休みの日や仕事終わりにわざわざ時間を割いてくれて本当にありがとう！今後日本に来たときの案内は任せてください👍

異なる文化を持つ人々とのコミュニケーションから感じること。
ここからは、ちょっとだけ真面目なお話になります。
私がバリのメンバーと交流したことから感じ、学んだことについてです。
今回、多くのバリチームのメンバーと会話することで、いかに自分が日本以外の文化を知らないかを改めて、目の当たりにしました。
Now, I’m going to get a little serious.
This is about what I learned and felt from interacting with Bali members.
Through conversations with many Bali team members this time, I saw firsthand how little I knew about cultures outside
Japan.
異文化へのリスペクト
育った環境が自分と異なる人の文化へのリスペクトは非常に重要です。あ、そうですよね、知っていますよね。言いたいのは「どんなにわかったつもりでも、実際に適切な行動をすることは難しい」ということです。
Respecting cultures of people who were raised in environments different from one’s own is extremely important. Yes, you know that. What I want to say is that “no matter how much you think you understand, it is difficult to behave appropriately in reality.”
日本人の宗教観は世界からみるとかなり特殊だと思います。多くの日本人は特定の宗教を持っていないにも関わらず、慣習として、誕生日はケーキとろうそくでお祝いし、結婚式は教会で祝杯し、新年には神社にお参りし、お守りを信じ、死ぬときはお寺のお墓に入ります。
I think the Japanese view of religion is quite unique from a global perspective. Many Japanese people, despite not having a specific religion, celebrate birthdays with cakes and candles as a custom, toast at weddings in churches, visit shrines at New Year, believe in amulets, and are buried in graves at temples when they die.
もちろん、日本の文化を否定したいわけではありません。私が伝えたいのは、我々は、他の国で生まれ育った人たちが持つ考え方と、異なる価値観を持っていること。そして、日本人は同一性を持った人に囲まれて育った人がほとんどであるを理解しておかなければならないことです。
Of course, I don’t mean to deny Japanese culture. I just want to say that we need to understand that we have different values from those born and raised in other countries. And that most Japanese people have been raised surrounded by people with the same identity.
異文化にリスペクトを持つためには、まずは自分たちの文化に対してしっかりと理解しておく必要があります。バリのとあるメンバーから、「なぜ日本人は、食べるときに手を合わせていただきますと言うのか？」と聞かれたことがあります。
この質問はあくまで例ですが、日本人の慣習や文化に対して、ちゃんと説明できるためには、自分たちの文化をしっかりと理解しておく必要があります。
In order to respect different cultures, we first need to have a solid understanding of our own culture. A member in Bali once asked me, “Why do Japanese people put their hands together and say ‘Itadakimasu’ before they eat?”
This question is just an example, but in order to adequately explain Japanese customs and culture, we need to have a solid understanding of our own culture.
おそらく私は、バリに滞在していたときに、失礼な発言や行動をしてしまっていると思います。
もちろん、私はそれらは意識的に行ったわけではありません。しかし、自分自身が意図しないところでやってしまっている、ということの方が問題なのだと思います。
I think that when I was staying in Bali, I might have made some disrespectful remarks or behaved inappropriately.
Of course, I didn’t do these things consciously. However, I think the problem is doing them without intending to.
リスペクトを持ち、文化の異なるメンバーとコミュニケーションを取ることで、お互いを少しずつ理解することは、自分の人生を豊かにしてくれるように感じました。
狭く凝り固まった自分の考え方をアップデートしていくことは、きっと人生を豊かにしてくれると信じています。
文化の異なるメンバーとの交流を恐れず、これからも多くのことを一緒に学んで行きたいと感じました。
By showing respect and communicating with members from different cultures, I felt that it helped me understand each other a little bit more and enrich my life.
Updating my rigid, narrow-minded thinking, I believe, will definitely enrich my life.
I’m not afraid of interacting with members from different cultures, and I want to keep learning a lot together.
英語を話せることで、見える景色が飛躍的に増える
今回得た学びの多くは、英語が話せなければ感じることができなかったと思います。
正直に言うと、Gruneに入るまで私は、英語を全くと言っていいほどに話すことはできませんでした。
日々のちょっとずつ積み重ねた勉強やGruneでの仕事、仙台オフィスの英語ネイティブのメンバーやインドネシアメンバーのと交流を通して、少しずつ少しずつ、話せる、聞き取れるが増えていきました。
もちろん、今でもまだまだ勉強は必要です。それでも、Gruneに入る前に比べたら、英語が話せるようになり、結果的に見える景色が大きく広がり、多様性の理解に繋げることができたと感じます。
Many of the matters I learned this time would not have been possible without the ability to speak English.
To be honest, before I joined Grune, I could hardly speak English at all.
Through daily little studies, working at Grune, and interacting with English native members in the Sendai office and Indonesian members, I gradually became able to speak and understand more and more.
Of course, I still need to study a lot. However, compared to before I joined Grune, I have become able to speak English, and as a result, the scenery I can see has greatly expanded, and I feel that I have been able to connect it to understanding diversity.
今回を通して、いかに自分が、同一性をもった人たちに囲まれて生きてきたかを思い知りました。
そして、文化が大きく違う国で暮らしてきたもの同士、コンテクストが全く違うからこそ、無条件の相手へのリスペクトを持つことができるのだと思います。
改めて、バリ出張の際にたくさん私のことをサポートしてくれたバリチームのみんなに感謝します。
Through this experience, I was made to realize how much I had been living surrounded by people with the same identity.
And that, because people who have lived in countries with very different cultures have entirely different contexts, they can have unconditional respect for each other.
Again, I would like to express my gratitude to all the Bali team members who supported me a lot during my business trip
to Bali.
