今回は、インドネシアのITエンジニアのDirgaさん(サムネイル)と過ごして感じた、仙台における日本語が話せないことの苦悩を紹介させてください。
Hi there! This is Homma, manager of Grune Sendai office. In this article, I would like to share with you some of the difficulties I felt when I spent time with Mas Dirga, an Indonesian engineer in Sendai, because she does not speak Japanese.

英語が通じるお店はどこ？
2022年の秋、Dirgaさんが日本に滞在した約3週間、オフィスでの仕事中はもちろん、お昼休憩や夕飯、休みの土日まで、ほぼ毎日のように彼と過ごしていました。
彼は日本語が話せないので、仙台オフィスのメンバーで彼をサポートしつつ、初めて日本にきた彼に、仙台を堪能して帰ってもらうために、おすすめの食べ物や行ってほしい場所を毎日考え、いろんな場所を案内しました。
During the three weeks that Dirga stayed in Japan in the fall of 2022, I spent almost every day with him, not only during work at the office, but also during lunch breaks, dinners, and even on weekends when he was off.
He does not speak Japanese, so while supporting him with the members of Sendai office, we thought of food recommendations and places we wanted him to visit every day and showed him around various places so that he could enjoy Sendai and return home after his first visit to Japan.
今回、私は日本人として、仙台案内して強く感じたことがありました。
As I’m Japanese, I strongly felt a thing this time when I guided him around Sendai.
それは、英語案内の少なさ です。
There were not enough English-speaking guides.
普段気にかけることってあまりないかもしれませんが、改めて思い返すと、英語の表記をみることって本当に少ないですよね。
そんな日本は、日本語を話せない外国人にとっては、普通のことが本当に難しく感じます。コンビニでお水を買うことすら戸惑い覚えること。立ち寄った居酒屋で、スムーズに注文することが難しいこと。看板にある日本語のローマ字表記では、意味までは理解できないこと…
そして何より、日本語がわからない人をサポートできるスタッフが、ほとんどどこにもいません。
You may not pay much attention to it in your daily life, but when you think back, there are very few places where you can see English signs.
For foreigners who do not speak Japanese, ordinary things seem really difficult. Even buying water at a convenience store can be confusing. It is difficult to order smoothly at an Izakaya when you stop by. The Japanese Roman alphabet on a signboard does not mean what it says….
And most importantly, there is hardly any staff anywhere who can assist those who do not understand Japanese.
日本という島国が意味すること
私は改めて感じました。日本は、日本語が話せないことがマイノリティの世界であると。
日本人は、「日本語が通じない人」とほとんど接したことがありません。そのためか、相手が日本語を話せないことに日本人が戸惑い、日本語ならできる親切な対応を忘れてしまうのではないかと感じました。
Japan is a world where not being able to speak Japanese is a minority. I felt that again.
Japanese people have rarely come into contact with “people who do not speak Japanese”. Perhaps because of this, I felt that Japanese people are confused by the fact that the other person does not speak Japanese, and forget to respond in the kindness that can be provided.
日本語を話せることが当たり前の人と一緒に過ごしてきた私にとっては、改めて日本の環境について考える良いきっかけでした。
特に多様性についてです。
多様性とは何か？文化の違いに対してリスペクトを持つとはどういうことか？
文化・価値観の異なる人と接することを、本当の意味で理解し、実践できる人は本当に少ないのではないかとさえ思いました。
文化の異なる人に対して、本当の意味でリスペクトを持って接することができているのか、自分自身で「評価すること」すら難しいのだと思います。
私自身、文化的な背景の異なる人との接し方を見つめ直していきたいと感じます。
It was a good opportunity for me to think about the Japanese environment again as I have spent so much time with people for whom speaking Japanese is a matter of course.
Especially about Diversity.
What is diversity? What does it mean to have respect for cultural differences?
I even thought that there are really very few people who truly understand and can practice treating people with different cultures and values.
I think it is difficult to even “evaluate” ourselves to see if we are truly treating people of different cultures with respect.
I feel that I myself would like to reevaluate how I treat people from different cultural backgrounds.
Dirgaさんの挨拶
Dirgaさんが仙台を出る最終日、仙台オフィスで最後の挨拶をしてくれました。仙台オフィスのメンバーの名前をあげてくれながら、たくさんの感謝を述べてくれました。こちらこそありがとう！
On the last day before Dirga-san left Sendai, he had a final greeting at the Sendai office. He thanked us a lot while giving him the names of the Sendai office members. I also would like to say Thank you very much!
そしてさらに彼は続けて、「お互いの文化が異なることから、気分を悪くさせてしまったことがあったと思う。さまざまな私の間違った行動に対して謝りたい」と話してくれました。
私はその時、これが文化の違いに対するリスペクトの持ち方の一つだと感じました。
育ってきた環境が違う私たちは、時々犯してしまうかもしれません。
ただし、その可能性を理解した上で、自分の意見を持ち、コミュニケーションを通して、相手の価値観に触れること、そしてそれを恐れずに続けることが、私は文化の違いに対するリスペクトを持つことなのだと感じました。
私は海を渡ったことがありません。
海を渡らずに形成されてしまった、日本人の私が持つバイアスを理解した上で、文化の違い、他者に対するリスペクトを忘れずに、生きていきたいと、この3週間を通して強く思いました。
He continued, “I think I have made some members feel bad because of our different cultures. I want to apologize for all my wrongs.
I felt then that this was one of the ways to have respect for cultural differences.
We may take wrongs from time to time because of our different upbringings.
However, understanding this possibility, having my own opinion, being exposed to the other person’s values through communication, and not being afraid to continue to do so, is what I felt was the way to have respect for cultural differences.
I have never crossed the ocean.
Understanding the bias I have as a Japanese person, which has been formed without crossing the sea, I strongly felt through these three weeks that I would like to live my life without forgetting cultural differences and respect for others.
バリ出張に向けて
2023年の春に、私はGruneの開発拠点である、バリに一人で出張に行く予定です。
私にとっては、初めて海外に行くことになります。
どんな失敗をするのか、今からドキドキとワクワクでいっぱいです！
そして、インドネシアの仲間に会うことを楽しみにしています。
In the spring of 2023, I will be going to Bali, Grune’s development base, on a business trip by myself.
It will be my first time going abroad.
I am very excited and nervous about what mistakes I will make!
And I am looking forward to meeting my Indonesian colleagues.
